How to Credit Music Properly on YouTube (And When It Actually Matters)

How to Credit Music Properly on YouTube (And When It Actually Matters)

Crediting music is good practice, but it’s also widely misunderstood.

In many cases, credit is appreciated but not legally required, especially when music is released specifically for creator use. That said, credit helps:

  • Build transparency

  • Support independent artists

  • Show good faith if questions ever arise

A simple credit (at least for us) is usually enough:

You don’t need paragraphs of legal text or multiple links. Overcomplicating credit doesn’t make you safer: clarity does.

Some platforms or licenses require specific credit formats, but copyright-safe projects typically keep this simple on purpose.

When in doubt, check the source’s usage page. If it’s written in plain English and easy to understand, that’s usually a good sign.
