Is “No Copyright Music” Actually a Real Thing?

Is “No Copyright Music” Actually a Real Thing?

Short answer: almost never.

Copyright is automatic. The moment music is created, it’s copyrighted by default. The phrase “no copyright music” is usually shorthand for:

  • Public domain works (rare for modern music)

  • Music released with broad permissions

  • Or, unfortunately, misleading marketing

The danger of the phrase is that it suggests zero risk, which simply isn’t true in today’s automated platform ecosystem.

A better question to ask is:

Who owns this music, and how have they chosen to release it?

That’s where copyright-safe approaches matter. Instead of pretending copyright doesn’t exist, they acknowledge it and handle it responsibly.

StreamKitty doesn’t use the term “no copyright music”. What we do is copyright safe music. This clarification claims something more useful: that the music is released intentionally for creators, with clarity and sustainability in mind. It’s copyrighted, because it protects our work, but you can freely use it. That distinction protects everyone involved, including us!
